We are the Space Heading Deezers: a group of 15-18 year old pupils from the Stedelijke Humaniora Dilsen. We do projects related to our shared interest: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Every year we participate in different projects such as Asgard, Astro Pi, CanSat,… These projects mainly focus on the big picture: work on a project from beginning to end. It begins with brainstorming and ends with presenting a conclusion, and in between we are working on, troubleshooting and adjusting our project. As a lot of different types of tasks are important during this process, from programming to the electric supply to outreach, all our members get a chance to use their own talents and do the things they like.
We’re also participating in the project James Webb Space Telescope, lead by the Institute for Research in Schools (IRIS), which focuses on helping researchers to identify potential targets for the James Webb Space Telescope. This project mainly focuses on exact sciences.
These projects are more than just the scientific, engineering or coding part: we have to present our ideas and our results, we have to work together as a team,… So not only do we train our engineering, coding and overall science skills, we also train our communication, outreach and planning skills.
Our main objective is making fun while doing science, technology and engineering!
